Liars - Drum's not dead

Rock indépendant          2006-Mute

Oubliez les Strokes, et jetez une oreille aux Liars, groupe de rock new-yorkais bien plus radical. Si la musique du Velvet est souvent décrite comme celle des bas-fonds new-yorkais, celle des Liars serait celle des bas-fonds des bas-fonds. Une musique de junkies tellement peu fréquentables qu’on aurait du les parquer 100 mètres sous terre. Où ils se livreraient à des rituels peu orthodoxes sous l’emprise de substances à côté desquelles l’héroïne de Lou Reed, c’est du petit lait…


Une musique tribale, mais qui n’a absolument rien de festif. Une musique d’une tribu de camés au dernier degré maltraitant de façon obsessionnelle leurs instruments. Drum’s not dead disent-ils… et c’est vrai que dans cet album aride, neurasthénique, les rythmes incantatoires de la batterie donnent un peu de vie. Et encore. Au bout d’un moment, la batterie se fait plus discrète, la musique plus éthérée et même, par intermittence, perd de sa noirceur.


Faut-il conseiller cet album ? Difficile à dire. La question pourrait être " peut-on aimer cet album " ? J’ai adoré leur précédent, un des disques les plus fascinants et fracassants de ces dernières années, et j’attendais celui-ci avec beaucoup d’impatience, mais je dois bien avouer que j’ai un peu de mal avec Drum’s not dead. Un peu de mal à être transporté tout du long, à ne pas sombrer à certains moments dans un léger ennui… Alors si un " fan " de leur précédent album, nourri à Sonic Youth (auxquels on pense inévitablement) a parfois du mal à rentrer dans celui-ci, difficile de le conseiller sans réserves. Faut dire aussi que les Liars ne font rien pour être aimé. Pas le genre de musique qui cherche à séduire l’auditeur. Mais leur courage, leur intransigeance, leur évolution stylistique vers une épure toujours plus déroutante est à saluer.


Faut-il acheter cet album ? Oui, si vous aimiez déjà leurs précédents, si Sonic Youth, le Velvet, les Stooges, Can, Godspeed you black emperor, le post-rock ou la musique minimaliste sont votre univers. Sinon, et si le voyage ne vous effraie pas, mieux vaut commencer par leurs précédents. Le premier, répondant au doux nom de They threw us all in a trench and stuck a monument on top est assez rock, ludique et foutraque ; mais le deuxième, They were wrong so we drowned (dont je parlerai bientôt), plus sauvage et tendu, est sûrement leur plus passionnant. A réserver tout de même à des oreilles averties…

 

Pour conclure, si cet album peut laisser quelque peu dubitatif par endroits, il n'en demeure pas moins un des plus intéressants du moment.

Steve Coleman and the Metrics - The way of the cipher

Le jazz n’est pas une musique qui se marie aisément avec tout. Le jazz-rock, malgré quelques réussites, a donné une flopée de disques pompeux, vains, qui perdaient en route le swing du jazz et l’intensité brute du rock pour se fourvoyer dans un étalage de technique assommant. Je ne parle même pas de la varièt’, où Jonasz est au jazz ce qu’André Rieu est au classique. Les mariages jazz-électro sont fréquents, avec une poignée de bons albums, mais beaucoup où la greffe ne prend pas.

 

Il existe aussi des mélanges digestes, des productions bien ficelées, sympathiques sans être transcendantes (St Germain, Norah Jones), et certains, plus rares (comme Amon Tobin, particulièrement dans Permutation, ou Magma, dans un autre genre), qui arrivent à intégrer avec intelligence et inspiration des éléments Jazz à leur musique.

 

De nombreux samples de Jazz sont utilisés dans le hip-hop, mais rares sont les véritables cross-over, où des rappeurs rejoignent une formation jazz. Un terrain qui reste à défricher, à explorer, ce que n’a pas manqué de faire le génial saxophoniste Steve Coleman (un des jazzmen les plus passionnants de l’époque, pour ne pas dire " le " plus passionnant). Loin d’être une simple curiosité, The way of the cipher fonctionne à merveille, comme si rien n’était plus évident et naturel que de mêler Jazz et rap. C’est un enregistrement live (au Hot Brass, à Paris, en 1995), mais avec une prise de son de grande qualité (pas le genre d’album live pirate ou on a l’impression qu’un seul micro a été utilisé, et placé à côté d’un cancéreux en phase terminale qui n’en finit plus de cracher ses poumons…).

 

Pourquoi cet album est une vraie réussite ? Parce que le jazz tel que le pratique Steve Coleman est le terreau idéal pour accueillir le hip-hop. Des rythmiques imparables, hypnotiques, un sens du groove hallucinant… Le jazz de Steve Coleman n’est ni un jazz figé dans le passé, répétant inlassablement les mêmes standards et incapable de couper le cordon avec les grandes figures du genre, ni un jazz consensuel avide de reconnaissance et prêt à tous les compromis. Steve Coleman est un artiste radical, insoumis engagé et véritablement concerné par la cause des noirs. Par certains côtés, il est assez proche de l’esprit du be-bop (le jazz des années 40-50, avec Parker, Gillespie…), jazz qui ne voulait plus distraire les blancs, mais exprimer une véritable identité " noire ", notamment par des rythmes trop rapides pour faire danser les blancs et des chorus nullement destinés à charmer l’auditeur. Cet esprit, ce côté " revendicatif ", on le retrouve chez Steve Coleman, mais il est aussi indissociable du rap. Pas étonnant que les deux aient pu se rencontrer et s’entendre à la perfection sur The way of the cipher.

D’ailleurs, la réunion du rap et du jazz fonctionne ici tellement bien qu’on se demande pourquoi l’expérience n’a pas tenté plus d’artistes. Peut-être tout simplement parce que Steve Coleman a placé la barre trop haut…

Why give away music ?

 

Steve Coleman est non seulement un musicien incroyablement supérieur à Zazie (comparaison aussi absurde que de comparer Beethoven à Annie Cordy…), il est aussi bien plus généreux, ouvert et pertinent sur la question du téléchargement. Il faut lire ce qu’il a écrit sur le partage de musique, plein d’humanité et de bon sens, avec un zeste de spiritualité (il est un passionné d’Egypte ancienne, d’ésotérisme, et utilise, comme Bach en son temps, les nombres et leurs significations pour construire ses œuvres).
